Lolita's Personality

Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the sea.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member and plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself not a concrete tank.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their family members until death. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her departure from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

It is not known what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't obliged to disclose this information. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.
